OLLIE, Iowa (AP) - Iowa authorities say a 70-year-old man has been hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered while checking a trap for opossums.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Sunday that James Conger of Ollie was injured in rural Keokuk County. They say a handgun in Conger’s coat pocked fired into his leg as he leaned over to remove an opossum from a live trap on Saturday.

Conger was taken to an Ottumwa hospital after the Saturday accident. His condition is unclear but officials say the wound isn’t life-threatening.
