WASHINGTON (AP) - A man has been convicted of killing a woman after DNA evidence linked him to the 1997 homicide.

A D.C. Superior Court jury on Monday convicted 50-year-old John F. General second-degree murder in the death of 38-year-old Deborah McKinney.

Prosecutors say McKinney’s partially clothed body was found in the stairwell of a northwest apartment building on Nov. 26, 1997. The medical examiner said she had been asphyxiated.

Authorities say General was identified as a suspect in the slaying in January 2010, when DNA testing confirmed that his blood was found on the scene. He was arrested in May 2010.

Sentencing is set for Feb. 27.
