WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to six to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty in the hit-and-run crash that killed a woman in northeastern Pennsylvania on Mother’s Day last year.

Thirty-seven-year-old John Kuniskas of Shavertown reached a plea deal with Luzerne County prosecutors in the May 2013 crash that killed 65-year-old Jean Darsky as she was returning home from attending church and visiting with a friend.

Kuniskas was sentenced immediately after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and attempted evidence-tampering on Monday, the day jury selection was scheduled to begin for his trial.

Under the plea deal, prosecutors withdrew charges of homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death, texting while driving and other counts.

Kuniskas wept as he apologized in court and asked for forgiveness from the family.
