TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Skip Foster will be the new president and publisher of the Tallahassee Democrat.

Gannett Co. Inc. announced the new hire Monday.

The company reported in a news release that Foster will assume his new role on Jan. 12. Foster was previously publisher of the Northwest Florida Daily News in Fort Walton Beach, along with overseeing four other publications.

Foster previously served as editor, then publisher of the Shelby (North Carolina) Star. He started his career in 1988 as a sports writer at the Hickory (North Carolina) Daily Record and then rose to managing editor of The Gaston Gazette in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Foster is taking over for Julie Moreno, who recently took a publishing position with The Examiner in Independence, Missouri. The Examiner is part of Gatehouse Media.
