PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison in the killing of a 16-year-old boy in Providence last year.

The Rhode Island attorney general’s office announced Monday that Louis Pina of Providence pleaded guilty to the December 2013 killing of Eric Cuesta. He got a life sentence for second-degree murder and a 10-year concurrent sentence for assault with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors say Cuesta and a friend were driving in a van on Adelaide Street that stopped near Pina and a friend. The two groups exchanged words and looks, and Pina fired two shots at the van. One hit and killed Cuesta.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin called the incident an act of “senseless violence with tragic consequences.”

The plea agreement was reached with the approval of Cuesta’s family.
