RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Thom Tillis is expecting to serve on two military-related committees important to North Carolina residents when he officially joins the U.S. Senate next month.

Senate Republicans announced committee assignments Monday for Tillis and other GOP senators for the 114th session of Congress.

Tillis will be on the Senate Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs committees, as well as agriculture and judiciary panels and a special committee on aging. Outgoing Sen. Kay Hagan - whom Tillis defeated last month - has been on armed services.

Sen. Richard Burr has been serving on veterans’ affairs but won’t be on the panel. He’s likely to become the Select Committee on Intelligence chairman. Burr will remain on the Finance Committee and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The assignments still must go through procedural steps.
