MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The state of Vermont has a new chief game warden.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Monday that warden Lt. Jason Batchelder will succeed Col. Dave LeCours, who retired in October.

Batchelder worked most recently in the Morrisville area, first as a field warden and then, since 2013, as the lieutenant for the northeast district.

Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Louis Porter says that during Batchelder’s time with the department he developed a reputation among his co-workers and with the general public for “energetically, meticulously, and fairly pursuing fish and wildlife violators.”

Batchelder grew up in Derby and served in the U.S. Coast Guard before joining Fish and Wildlife.
