SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Investigators say the mother of a 3-year-old boy who shot and killed himself with his dead father’s gun thought she had unloaded the weapon.

Simpsonville Police Chief Keith Grounsell told media outlets that the mother removed the clip from the gun after her husband died of cancer in May, but didn’t know much about weapons and left a bullet in the chamber when she put the gun in a dresser.

Authorities say Michael Boyles climbed on top of Christmas presents and found the gun Monday. Investigators say the boy accidentally pulled the trigger, shooting himself in the head. The mother and the boy’s 2-year-old brother were in another room.

The police chief says he doesn’t expect to charge anyone in the shooting.
