INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 51-year-old woman has died after she crashed while skiing in suburban Detroit.

The Oakland Press of Pontiac and The Detroit News report sheriff’s deputies responded Friday night to Pine Knob in Oakland County’s Independence Township following a report of an injured skier. Investigators say she apparently fell, crashed into a tree and then went into a retaining fence.

The Macomb County woman told officials about her fall and reported having chest pain. She was taken to an area hospital, where the department says she died.

Robert Shick, general manager at Pine Knob, says in a statement that there was immediate comment planned “out of respect for the family in their time of grief.”

WDIV-TV reports that Pine Knob was closed Monday amid an investigation into the death.
