PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) - A baby whale found beached in Rhode Island over the weekend has been euthanized.

The female pygmy sperm whale was found at Island Park Beach in Portsmouth on Saturday morning.

Experts from the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut were called in to try and save the animal. But aquarium spokesman Dale Wolbrink tells the Newport Daily News (https://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) the juvenile whale was in poor condition and could not swim.

Residents told the newspaper uniformed environmental officers would not let people try and move the 145 pound whale back into the water. They say the aquarium was called at 8:30 a.m., but officials did not arrive until about 2 p.m.

Wolbrink said an aquarium team assembled as quickly as possible to get to the site.
