SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The family of a former student has sued a Sacramento school district, claiming that repeated bullying and harassment culminated in a sexual assault on their special-needs son in a locker room at Rio Americano High School.

The Sacramento Bee reports Tuesday (https://bit.ly/1wVEorQ) that the suit against San Juan Unified was filed earlier this year and amended this month.

Court papers show the boy was in ninth grade at the time of the March 2013 attack by a fellow student that was witnessed by others.

The newspaper says the perpetrator was taken into custody a day later and prosecuted through the juvenile justice system.

The alleged victim is now 16 and no longer enrolled in the district.

District officials declined to comment because of ongoing litigation.
