CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - U.S. Sen.-elect Shelley Moore Capito will serve on environmental, energy and budget committees as a freshman U.S. senator.

The Republican announced her committee assignments Monday.

Capito will sit on the Senate’s Appropriations Committee, Energy and Natural Resources Committee and Environment and Public Works Committee.

She said she will use the posts to fight against Environmental Protection Agency carbon emission rules from coal-fired power plants, adding that she wants to protect the state’s coal and natural gas jobs.

Capito will fill the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller. She is finishing her seventh term serving in West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.

Her victory helped Republicans flip control of the Senate in the November elections.
