CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Cranston’s City Council has rejected a proposed salary and benefits package that would have come with promoting a police captain to major.

Capt. Todd Patalano had negotiated a $95,000 salary and a package that would have tied his benefits to the police union labor contract, giving him any enhanced benefits negotiated for unionized officers.

Police majors in Cranston currently earn about $86,000. Councilman Steven Stycos tells the Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1yUR3q5 ) the council believes it would be inappropriate to give Patalano sweeteners that are not shared with others in management.

The council has asked Mayor Allan Fung to renegotiate a deal with the police labor union and Patalano. It postponed a vote on his promotion for four weeks.
