FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - A detention officer at the state prison in Florence is recovering after being slashed in the neck by an inmate with a razor blade.

Pinal County Sheriff’s officials say the officer was collecting razors Monday night in the dayroom of the jail, which was occupied by several inmates.

They say Christopher Durazo handed the detention officer the plastic handle of the razor with his left hand and then used his right hand to slash the officer with the razor blade.

The officer received an 8-inch-long cut across his neck and called for backup.

Authorities say Durazo was taken to the ground and restrained.

The officer was treated at a hospital.

Sheriff’s officials say the 26-year-old Durazo now is facing another aggravated assault charge.

He was booked into jail in September.
