THOMPSON, N.Y. (AP) - A man involved in an armed confrontation with police in upstate New York last year has been charged with holding his two daughters hostage at knifepoint.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office tells the Times Herald-Record of Middletown (https://bit.ly/1wcNXkh ) that 45-year-old John Ortiz held his 9- and 11-year-old daughters hostage for nearly two hours Sunday in the bedroom of his home in the town of Thompson.

Deputies say they could hear the two girls crying during the standoff, which ended when the sheriff’s SWAT team rushed in and subdued Ortiz. The girls weren’t harmed.

In May 2013, Ortiz pulled out a handgun during a confrontation with police. He was on probation for that incident.

Ortiz is being held in the county jail. It couldn’t be determined if he has a lawyer.
