TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Lee County will charge more to house young offenders from other counties starting Jan. 1.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1A5HcS9 ) the board of supervisors raised the daily rate to $130. The juvenile detention center currently charges other counties $90 a day.

Lee County Judge Charlie Brett says the center provides education, health, mental health and dental services.

Brett says the extra money will mean the center can keep a mental health professional available more hours. Counseling services are now part-time and federal funds for the program have been reduced. Officials say the increased fees will cover about $19,000 of the $21,000 needed to cover additional salary, benefits and payroll taxes for the expanded hours.

The center routinely holds as many as 21 children.
