WOBURN, Mass. (AP) - An Army veteran from Lowell who served in Afghanistan has been sent to prison for up to 16 years for shaking his 2-month-old son so violently that the boy died days later.

Christopher Berry was sentenced after pleading guilty Monday in Middlesex Superior Court to involuntary manslaughter.

The 24-year-old Berry had originally been charged with second-degree murder following the May 2013 death of his son, William.

Prosecutors say the father, who has post-traumatic stress disorder, violently shook his son for about 30 seconds because the boy would not stop crying. The baby was taken to the hospital with severe brain damage and died several days later.

Berry’s lawyer said there was no intent to kill and his client was overwhelmed by the responsibilities of fatherhood.
