LARGO, Fla. (AP) - A Tampa Bay area man who fled to Louisiana after killing his former girlfriend and a man she had been dating has been sentenced to life in prison.

As part of a deal with Pinellas County prosecutors to avoid the death penalty, 27-year-old Jamaal Jenkins pleaded guilty to the murders Tuesday.

Authorities say Jenkins fatally shot his former girlfriend, 24-year-old Nekole Burkes, at a La Quinta motel in January 2013. A week later, Jenkins killed 31-year-old Tieyannie Dewitte Hollis at a St. Petersburg apartment complex.

The Tampa Bay Times (https://goo.gl/Gj5jS9 ) reports that police spent about a month searching for Jenkins, who fled to Metairie, Louisiana. That’s where the U.S. Marshal’s Service arrested him in February 2013.

Last December, officials say Jenkins unsuccessfully tried to escape from the Pinellas County Jail.
