RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a 70-year-old man to 12 years in prison for killing of a Raleigh cab driver in 1971.

Area media outlets report Sinatra Dunn, who was arrested in July for first-degree murder, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to second-degree murder in the death of Ralph Smith.

Prosecutors said Dunn was a suspect but that investigators didn’t have enough evidence to charge him. The case went cold until this year, when Dunn confessed to a detective re-examining the case.

Dunn said he was mentally ill and addicted to drugs at the time. His family said he’d turned his life around since then.

Smith’s family also told the judge that they did not believe Dunn deserved a harsh punishment. After the hearing, they said they felt the sentence was appropriate.
