NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A Newark man has died from injuries he suffered when he was shot by retired police officer who was working as a security guard at a northern New Jersey business.

Essex County prosecutors say 26-year-old Devin Grimes died at a hospital Monday afternoon, two days after he was shot.

Prosecutors say the guard was sitting in a vehicle in Newark when Grimes and another man approached him early Saturday. One of the men then pulled out a handgun and ordered the guard out of the car.

The guard then shot Grimes, and the second suspect fled in a white pickup truck.

The guard, a former Union City police officer, was not injured.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing. The guard’s name has not been disclosed.
