MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Mesa police say at least one officer shot and wounded a knife-wielding man who ignored commands to drop the weapon and tried to enter a vehicle containing his wife and children.

The shooting occurred Monday evening at an apartment complex.

Detective Steve Berry says officers responding to a report of a man with a knife first fired at least one non-lethal beanbag round after he refused to drop the knife.

Berry says the man then was shot as he moved to enter the vehicle because the officers at that point saw two young children inside.

Police on Tuesday identified the wounded man as 26-year-old Jeremiah Lowery.

According to Berry, Lowery remains hospitalized for treatment of his injuries but is expected to survive.
