RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - An N.C. Department of Transportation work crew is up for an award after it stopped a motorist driving the wrong way on Interstate 40 in Davie County.

NCDOT said Davie County Fire Marshal Jerry Myers was traveling on U.S. 601 on Dec. 4 when he saw a vehicle turn onto the I-40 East exit ramp and proceed the wrong way onto the road. Myers got on I-40 West, went to the next exit and then drove east.

By the time he reached the exit ramp, several NCDOT workers had managed to stop the vehicle and warn oncoming traffic. Myers said there’s no question their actions prevented a tragic event.

The crew is up for The Extra Mile Award, which recognizes NCDOT employees who go beyond their normal duties.
