DETROIT (AP) - The president of the nation’s largest teachers union plans to speak to a meeting of the Detroit Economic Club.

The speech by the National Education Association’s Lily Eskelsen Garcia is scheduled Tuesday afternoon at MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit.

The union says she’ll discuss why students must be educated for work and society in the 21st Century. She’ll also discuss why policies that nurture creative thinking and meet the needs of children should be pursued in place of a fill-in-the-blanks approach to education.
