TYLER, Texas (AP) - Police in East Texas have charged a man who they say tried to hire someone to kill his pregnant wife by offering proceeds from a ring she wore as payment.

Thirty-two-year-old Chip Owens of Tyler was being held at the Smith County Jail Tuesday morning on $1 million bond. He was arrested Friday and charged with criminal solicitation.

Police say Owens asked an informant to kill his wife and a man he believed was her lover. Police say Owens planned to have his wife killed at their home in what would appear to be a botched home invasion.

Police say Owens supplied the informant with a handgun and agreed to pay $10,000 from the sale of one of his wife’s rings.

Online court records didn’t indicate an attorney for Owens.
