EDEN, N.C. (AP) - The chairman of the Rockingham County Commission says he has no plans to step down after being charged with driving while intoxicated.

Authorities say 60-year-old William Keith Mabe crashed his truck on Saturday, running off the road and hitting trees. The Highway Patrol says Mabe’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

His license has been suspended, and Mabe is charged with DWI, traveling left of center and reckless driving.

Mabe has been a commissioner since 2010 and was elected as chair this term. He says he had taken pain medication before the crash and that anyone can make a mistake. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.

The commissioners’ next meeting is Jan. 5.
