SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The Salem City Council voted unanimously Monday night to name a new pedestrian bridge for the president of the Oregon State Senate, Peter Courtney.

The Salem Statesman Journal reports (https://stjr.nl/138WxVd) Courtney served on the council in 1975 when the first plans were drawn for the 304-foot-long footbridge. It will span the Willamette Slough to connect Riverfront Park with Minto-Brown Island Park.

Construction of the $10 million bridge is expected to begin next summer and be complete in 2016.
