SALEM, Va. (AP) - Salem officials say a city police detective is under investigation by the FBI.

City spokesman Mike Stevens tells media outlets that the officer has been on suspension without pay since Oct. 10.

He says the officer had been assigned to a local U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration task force for the past five years. He declined to identify the officer.

Stevens didn’t provide details of the investigation. He says the officer’s suspension will be reviewed at the conclusion of court proceedings.

Salem Police Chief Tim Guthrie declined to comment. He says it’s a personnel matter.

Agents with the FBI and the DEA also declined to comment.
