SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A judge has denied a request for a new trial for a former high school teacher serving life in prison for sexually assaulting a girl.

The San Antonio Express-News reports (https://bit.ly/13sCfqK ) State District Judge Maria Teresa Herr turned down 35-year-old Adam Eannarino’s request on Monday. A jury in August convicted him of continuous sexual assault of the girl, who was about 11 years old at the time.

University of the Incarnate Word’s Chancellor Denise Doyle and her husband hired a prominent defense attorney for $50,000 to represent Eannarino. Doyle says her husband knew Eannarino through work. Eannarino’s attorney argued previous legal counsel wasn’t competent.

Herr said Monday there wasn’t enough evidence to warrant a new trial. Ennarino’s attorney plans to appeal the decision.
