WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A school crossing guard in West Springfield who had just helped a child safely cross the street has died after being struck by a vehicle.

Police say the woman was struck at about 8:45 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Elm and Garden streets not far from the Coburn Elementary School.

Her name has been made public.

Schools Superintendent Michael Richard says the woman was a longtime crossing guard who had just guided a student cross the street.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with in investigators. The death remains under investigation and there was no word on charges.

Counseling is available for any students, faculty, or staffers who need to talk about the tragedy.
