PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A 25-year-old Woonsocket police officer has been sentenced to six months in prison for abusing his 9-year-old sister in 2012.

Twenty-five-year-old Patrick Cahill also must spend 9 ½ years on probation under terms of a sentence handed down Monday by Superior Court Judge Daniel Procaccini.

Cahill was convicted in October of one count of second-degree child abuse. Prosecutors say he choked the girl in August 2012. He has been on paid administrative leave since his arrest.

The judge agreed to stay the execution of the sentence until January 14, after the holidays.
