CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Jackson County man will spend a month in prison for capturing about 300 turtles and selling them to out-of-state buyers.

Media outlets report that Thomas Pepin was sentenced Monday in federal court on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful transport and sale of wildlife.

Prosecutors say the Ravenswood resident captured the Eastern box turtles from sites near his home between July 2012 and September 2013. He sold the turtles online.

According to court records, Pepin put some turtles in tube socks to restrict their movement and placed them in plastic bins with limited air. The bins were put in a cardboard box and shipped to Pennsylvania. Half of the turtles were dead when they arrived.
