SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts State Police trooper involved in a car crash in North Andover has pleaded not guilty to drunken driving and other related charges.

Dale Jenkins was released on $20,000 bail after his arraignment Tuesday in Salem Superior Court on several charges related to the May crash that seriously injured his passenger. He is also charged with carrying a gun while intoxicated.

Police say the 36-year-old Jenkins crashed his antique Corvette into a telephone pole. Responding officers said he smelled of alcohol, was unsteady and told a firefighter he’d been drinking. He refused a breath test and did not get a blood test.

Jenkins’ lawyer, Hank Brennan, said he’s confident that the evidence will “overwhelmingly favor an acquittal.”

Jenkins has been suspended without pay.
