YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - The mayor and police commissioner of Yonkers are warning the public and businesses about a scam.

Residents have been getting calls from someone who claims to be collecting a debt from a utility company, the IRS or as a settlement for a vehicle accident.

The caller threatens the victim with the loss of heat or electricity, deportation, or criminal prosecution.

The victim is then asked to place money on a prepaid card and transfer money to the criminals.

One Yonkers victim lost $25,000.
