TEXARKANA, Texas (AP) - Authorities in Northeast Texas have released the name of an officer who fatally shot a burglary suspect who was holding a spoon.

Texarkana police said Tuesday that Officer Brent Lawing fatally shot 35-year-old Dennis Grigsby on Monday. The three-year employee of the department has been placed on administrative leave.

Police say Lawing confronted Grigsby in the garage of a resident who reported a break-in. They say Grigsby ignored an order to stop and advanced on Lawing with a 7-inch metal object that looked like a knife. Police say they later determined the object was a spoon.

The suspect’s mother, Evelyn Grigsby, says she and her son lived across the street from the home and that he had a mental illness.

The Texas Rangers and the department are investigating.
