SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City police say a 3-year-old girl who was inside a running car that was stolen has been found safe.

Police spokesman Greg Wilking says the car was stolen from an apartment complex parking lot on Redwood Road a little before 5 p.m. Tuesday. Wilking says the girl was with her grandmother, who left the car on while she went into the complex office.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert and found the car abandoned in a nearby parking lot about 50 minutes later.

Wilking tells the Deseret News the theft was a crime of opportunity and the thief apparently dumped the vehicle quickly upon seeing the child.
