FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Plows are at work on highways in the Flagstaff area as a storm drops snow in Arizona’s higher elevations.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says motorists traveling Wednesday should expect snow on Interstate 17.

Meanwhile, in southern Arizona, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office says chains or four-wheel-drive vehicles are required for travel on the highway up Mount Lemmon. Only residents and employees are allowed to travel the highway.

The National Weather Service has winter weather advisories in effect until late Wednesday night in north-central Arizona and until early Thursday morning in the White Mountains, with the heaviest snowfall expected from late morning early evening.

The weather service says snow accumulations are generally expected to total 2 to 5 inches but up to a foot above 9,000 feet.
