WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - A trial has been set in March for a Waukegan mother accused of killing her 11-year-old daughter.

Nicholette Lawrence pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of first-degree murder in October. She faces life in prison if convicted of the charges.

Her daughter, Raashanai Coley, died in September from injuries that police and prosecutors say were caused by abuse. Waukegan police say Lawrence admitted punching her daughter in the stomach earlier in the week.

The (Waukegan) News Sun (https://trib.in/16tBDCj ) reports an autopsy determined the punch went through the girl’s spine and caused a tear in her stomach. Police say it also showed signs of malnutrition and evidence of past abuse, including scarring and bruises.

The attorneys representing Lawrence declined to comment. She remains in Lake County Jail on $5 million bond.
