BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A spectacled bear believed to be among the oldest of her species in the world has been euthanized because of declining health.

The Buffalo Zoo announced Wednesday that the 35-year-old bear named Diana died Tuesday.

Authorities say spectacled bears, also known as Andean bears, typically live 20-25 years in captivity, slightly longer than in the wild. They are listed as vulnerable on the World Conservation Union’s Red List of Threatened Animals.

Diana was born at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago in 1979 and had been at the Buffalo Zoo since 1980. She gave birth to three surviving cubs.

The Buffalo Zoo says she was the world’s oldest spectacled bear.

There are believed to be fewer than 2,000 of the bears in the wild.
