BEIJING (AP) - Chinese Super League club Guangzhou R&F; says it has reached a deal with current Getafe manager Cosmin Contra for him to be their new coach.

The club said in a statement Thursday that the Romanian will arrive soon in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou to sign the contract ahead of the start of the 2015 season.

Contra will replace former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who spent more than a year coaching Guangzhou R&F; and led it to a third-place finish last season. Eriksson moved to club Shanghai East Asia last month.

Contra was under contract at Getafe until the end of next season, and the compensation from Guangzhou will provide much-needed funds to the cash-strapped Madrid club, which is currently 13th in La Liga.

Guangzhou also said that it had agreed to sign Valencia midfielder Michel, who has been on loan at Getafe. The Chinese club said he would be signed if he passes the standard medical test.

The Chinese Super League launched in 2005 as China’s top division, seeking to shake off the corruption, bad image and low standard that had blighted the domestic league beforehand. The league has emerged as a regional power over recent years amid heavy spending on foreign talent both on and off the field.
