EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A woman who admitted arranging to have her daughter’s boyfriend kill her estranged husband was derided by one of his children as “the sickest, most evil woman” before a judge sentenced her to 60 years in prison.

Brenda Dossett, 47, could have faced life without parole if she had been convicted at trial of murder in the May killing of Gilbert Dossett.

But the Evansville woman instead agreed last month to plead guilty to murder and testify against 19-year-old Mason James Hughes, who’s accused of fatally shooting Gilbert Dossett as he slept in his bed. Hughes’ murder trial is set to begin March 9.

Court documents say Brenda Dossett expected a $42,000 life insurance payout from her husband’s death. She has admitted offering to buy Hughes a car for as much as $10,000 in exchange for the killing.

Police said Dossett and Hughes staged Gilbert Dossett’s home by overturning furniture to make it look like a robbery had occurred.

Gilbert Dossett’s adult daughters, Erica Kinsler and Mendy Dossett, provided emotional testimony during Wednesday’s sentencing that brought court employees to tears, the Evansville Courier & Press reported (https://bit.ly/1GTXE8l ).

The daughters testified that they were the first to find their father’s body because Brenda Dossett had prompted them to check his welfare through text and Facebook messages two days after his killing.

“You are the sickest, most evil woman I have ever met,” Kinsler told Dossett during the hearing. “I can still smell the blood and the death of walking into my dad’s home to find his body.”
