WASHINGTON (AP) - A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for shooting an 8-year-old girl who was hit when he was aiming for someone else.

Karie Brown of Washington was sentenced Thursday in D.C. Superior Court. He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault while armed and other offenses.

Prosecutors say on Feb. 14, Brown and 22-year-old Nathaniel Patten, also of Washington, went to an apartment building looking for an alleged drug dealer to rob.

Authorities say the men followed the victim into the building and tried to rob him, but he ran. Prosecutors say Brown fired several shots at the victim, one of which hit an 8-year-old playing outside.

Patten pleaded guilty last month to assault with intent to commit robbery while armed. He will be sentenced in March.
