MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Middletown police say a detective handcuffed a 10-year-old girl as officers arrested her father.

A police report says the incident happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday as 27-year-old Kenneth Ford was leaving a liquor store. Officers had a warrant charging Ford with several crimes.

Police say the girl was in a car sitting next to a bag of suspected crack cocaine and screaming uncontrollably as her father was arrested. The report says Detective Louis Julia had the girl get out of the car and handcuffed her.

Lt. Heather Desmond says officers didn’t know the girl was only 10 because she was tall for her age and immediately took off the handcuffs when learning her age minutes later.

The report says the girl’s mother was “irate” that her daughter was handcuffed.
