PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The group whose New Year’s parade has been dubbed Philadelphia’s Mardi Gras says it’ll put on an actual Mardi Gras celebration next year.

The Mummers announced Wednesday about 10 string bands will march Feb. 22 down Main Street in the city’s vibrant Manayunk neighborhood.

Organizers say the free event will give spectators an up close look at the colorfully costumed bands while keeping the Mummers tradition alive.

Parade goers can also purchase $10 wristbands for access to additional events framed around the celebration. Proceeds help keep the bands afloat.

The planned Manayunk celebration follows a smaller event with Mummers bands last year in Northern Liberties.

Organizers say this year’s focus is on the music and won’t feature any of the comics, wenches, or fancies that populate the New Year’s event.
