PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island State Police say they’re looking into embezzlement allegations at the Junior League of Rhode Island Inc.

Maj. Kevin O’Brien said Thursday that the state police financial crimes unit is investigating a complaint made within the past two weeks that embezzlement was occurring at the Providence-based women’s organization, which promotes volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities.

O’Brien says the complaint was filed by someone within the Junior League and it alleges thousands of dollars were stolen. He would not release any other details.

A representative of the Junior League told WPRO-AM that the investigation centers on one person involved with the organization. The representative declined further comment.

A message seeking comment was left at the Junior League Thursday evening.
