MARINETTE, Wis. (AP) - Four people were in jail Thursday in northeastern Wisconsin following a police chase, shooting and some home burglaries.

Sheriff’s officials said three of the four are suspected of burglarizing houses in two Marinette County towns. And two of the four are accused of leading deputies on a highway chase Wednesday with shots fired from the suspects’ vehicle. No one was struck by gunfire.

Authorities said the fourth person, a woman, is accused of trying to help the three men flee the area.

Deputies closed a section of Highway 141 and evacuated some homes after the two in the vehicle crashed and ran away Wednesday night. They were taken into custody about three hours later.

At least two of the suspects are also wanted in Michigan, sheriff’s officials said.

Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve said the events began to unfold when authorities in Michigan informed his deputies that two wanted felons were staying at a hotel in Crivitz. The men may have robbed some homes in Pound and Stephenson, authorities said.

Authorities spotted the suspects’ car and gave chase, WLUK-TV reported (https://bit.ly/1wJjIkK ). The officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but the suspects sped away and later fired on them, Sauve said. He said he didn’t know if the squad car was hit.

Officers rolled stop strips across the highway, and the vehicle went off the road after its tires were deflated, Sauve said.

The suspects crashed in the woods north of Middle Inlet and fled on foot, Sauve said. Authorities shut down about 10-mile stretch of the highway and took additional steps to ensure people near the crash site were safe, he said.

“We did not know where this foot pursuit was going to end up, and we knew these guys were armed,” Sauve said.

Residents were evacuated and businesses locked down.

“Two cops came to the door. They said, ‘you better go out for a while,” said Chuck Buechler, who lives in the town of Middle Inlet.

Authorities arrested the men about three hours later. They also arrested a third person at a gas station in Crivitz and police are currently investigating that person’s involvement, Sauve said.

The suspects are in jail awaiting charges.
