SAN DIEGO (AP) - A disabled Southern California man who tried to smuggle guns to a Mexican drug cartel and hid bullets in his wheelchair has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison.

Sergio Garcia-Rico of Chula Vista was sentenced Thursday. He pleaded guilty to attempted smuggling and other charges in August.

Garcia-Rico is a quadriplegic with limited use of his hands but he can drive.

Federal prosecutors say Garcia-Rico bought firearms at California gun shops and shows for delivery to the violent Knights Templar cartel, hiding the guns in his specially-outfitted van and thousands of rounds of ammo in the bottom of an electric wheelchair.

He was arrested in January after the van was stopped and searched at the Otay Mesa border checkpoint.
