SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Sioux City family and their pets have escaped an early morning house fire unharmed.

The Sioux City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1CaWJjj ) that the fire was reported before 5 a.m. Thursday. Deputy Fire Marshal Frank Fulton says crews arrived to find flames and heavy smoke coming from the house.

Three occupants were able to escape. Fulton says they suffered minor smoke inhalation, but did not know if the people received medical treatment. Three dogs and two cats also were safely removed from the house.

Fulton says the house was severely damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
