ATLANTA (AP) - A former Atlanta police officer has been sentenced to prison for using excessive force.

WSB-TV (https://bit.ly/1DSO61a ) reported Friday that a Fulton County judge gave Nicholas Dimauro a 10-year sentence, with five years to be served in prison.

A jury convicted Dimauro of one count each of aggravated battery and aggravated assault and two counts of violation of the oath of office.

Dimauro stopped Robert Wormley early one morning in 2010 on an Atlanta street. Dimauro said Wormley ran when he tried to question him and then fought with him. Wormley said Dimauro severely beat him, causing a broken wrist and ribs.

Dimauro was fired in 2011. The Atlanta Civil Service Board reinstated him two years later. He retired shortly after being reinstated.
