DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A former Philadelphia businessman and his companion died after they were hit by a car as they crossed a Florida street.

The crash happened Wednesday night on North Ocean Drive in Deerfield Beach.

Deputies say 85-year-old Philip Kendall and 80-year-old Francine Freedman had just moved into their beachside neighborhood a few days earlier.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Kendall was the former owner of Packard Press, publisher of the Legal Intelligencer and Dorland’s Medical Directory.

He sold the company in 1967, repurchased it in 1969 and sold it again in 1978.

He was also an executive with Global Financial Press, GCOM2 Solutions and the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation.

The driver of the car was 64-year-old Mark Lasman of Boca Raton. He remained at the scene after the crash.
