MIAMI (AP) - A man convicted of fatally shooting his father - a South Miami commissioner - has been sentenced to life in prison.

A Miami-Dade County judge sentenced 22-year-old Jason Beckman on Friday. He was convicted last month of first-degree murder. Because Beckman was 17 at the time of the killing, he was not eligible for the death penalty.

Prosecutors say Beckman had planned his father’s murder for weeks. In April 2009, he walked into a bathroom as Jay Beckman was showering and shot him in the face with a shotgun.

Defense attorneys said the killing wasn’t intentional. They pointed to Jason Beckman’s social awkwardness and the fact that he suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, a type of autism.

The Miami Herald (https://goo.gl/hqCPgn) reports that Jay Beckman had been a city commissioner for three years before his death.
